How Image Compositing Works

For those that don't know— what is image compositing?

Ever wondered how a roaring dragon breathes fire into a tranquil forest scene, or how an astronaut plants a flag on an alien planet, all while sitting comfortably in a studio? Welcome, random stranger, to the magic of image compositing. It's the secret sauce that lets us artists bend digital reality to our will, merging different visual elements from separate sources into a single image—creating a world where anything is possible.

Image compositing is where I started, and it will always be my favorite. Paired with digital painting, it becomes one of the most powerful tools for creating or modifying images of any kind, thus I try to sprinkle image compositing into all my other services when I can.

Now keep in mind— it doesn't have to be this elaborate. Maybe you just want me to take the selfie you took in the garage and make it look like you're standing in Time Square. Or help Uncle Herman grow some of that hair back. No matter the level you want to achieve, it's all part of the package!

How Your Quote Works:

Once I understand what you need me to do, I'll send you a quote. Your quote will be based on my hourly rate for this service, and it will not only include my time spent working on your idea but also some wiggle room for minor revisions under 15 minutes. For the most part, time spent in communication with you regarding your vision for the project is free of charge.

Keep in mind that your quote is at most an educated guess, as there are an immense number of variables that can affect how long it takes to complete an image compositing project— not to mention changes/additions/revisions you choose to make along the way.

Make sure to check out my Policies page and FAQs page for more information.

How payment works:

For payment, I'll email you an invoice which will reflect the most recent quote I gave you. If you're curious about how it works and what to look for when I send it, you can find the instructions for finding and paying your invoice here.

When I send the invoice, it will come from dawson@fortheking.design. I'll notify you when I send it so make sure to check spam if you don't see it.

Time for some expectation setting.

A project like this is a back-and-forth sort of thing. I always follow my client's instructions as precisely as possible, but it's still uncommon for the first draft to be exactly what you envisioned. Maybe someday we will be able to neurally link our brains together and you can imprint your exact vision on my mind, but until then there will likely be several drafts.

One way to vastly speed up the process is to provide me with image references— visuals I can see to help convey your ideas. After all, they are worth a thousand words.

The timeline for completing an image compositing project can vary significantly, ranging from a few hours to sometimes even 12 business days. This is primarily due to:

1) the complexity of your project, 2) any modifications you wish to make during the process, 3) and the speed at which you're able to provide feedback.

As large as this range is, it's the most precise timeline I can provide without knowing the details of your project and how promptly you will provide your valuable feedback.

And now moving on to what I need from you:

Please fill out this form (if you haven't already) so that I can add you to the system.

Wow. That was easy.

That's it! Let me know if you have any questions.
